President’s Report

1.1 MCoS, Catherine Smith Memorial Trust winter skills course:

The weekend was very successful and it is strongly recommended that a group from DURC attend if there is a repeat next year. The course should be attended by DURC in addition to sending members on Conville.  The course was organised by Roger Wild with cooperation from Glenmore Lodge and funding from the Catherine Smith Memorial Trust.  The MCoS weekend was a fantastic opportunity with full instruction, room, board and equipment hire for £15.00.

1.2 Indoor Ice climbing competition

Stirling University recently proposed an indoor winter climbing competition at the Ice Factor.  The event would invite all Scottish university mountaineering clubs to compete. The president has expressed interest in participating in this, and thinks it would be an excellent way to interact with other clubs.

1.3 Proposed Interclub AD

A member of Glasgow Caledonian University’s Mountaineering club has also suggested an inter-club social weekend like the DURC annual dinner. Jon will set up an online forum to make contact with other club presidents on such matters easier in the future.

1.4 Mountain mind quiz:

A team of six went over to Perth and didn’t bring back the boot!!

Vice-president’s Report

2.1 Lectures:

No dates set as yet; watch out for First aid and avalanche lectures.

2.2 Club Bothy:

Difficulties in contacting the custodian.

2.3 Gear Night in Perth

A gear night has provisionally been set up for the 6th of April at Craigdon Mountain Sports.  This is during the Easter holidays and the VP therefore will gage interest before confirming.  Later dates are possible. New spring lines will be available.

Meets Secretary

3.1 Ice Factor:

It will cost £37.50 per person, including gear hire and tuition. Fiona suggests that it is only £17 if people can supply own gear and more experienced are willing to sign them in and give advice. If there is enough interest to fill a bus the club may be able subsidise the trip. There is a suggestion that an instructor may be hired for one group, and this group pass on their suggestions to the remaining people.

3.2 Ratho:

Booked for Sunday 19th March; if 15+ people sign up it would reduce the cost to just £5 per head. (£9.50 per head otherwise)

3.3 Alien rock bouldering competition

We are sending a team to the competition in Edinburgh on Wednesday the 15th March. The competition involves climbing from 12-4pm. The club will subsidise transport, Mhairi will drive and entrants will pay their own entry fees.

3.4 BUSA climbing:

It is now too late to enter a team for this year, however; the club will try to get a team for next year as this may encourage more climbers to join. Furthermore, as a competitive club more money may be available to us from the sports union.

3.5 Huts for next year

Social  Secretary

4.1 Annual dinner

This has been booked for the weekend 12th -14th of May and will be in Inchree located between Fort William and Glencoe. 33 spaces have been reserved in 2 hostels. The meal will be a set menu of 3 courses. The venue can cater for up to 70 people, so potentially other people will be able to camp. There will be a ceilidh after dinner, and Colin has been asked to organise a band. The location is ideal for climbing and walking.

4.2 T-shirts

Styles available

- Men: normal, long sleeve, polo shirt or hoody.

-Women: fitted crew neck, polo shirt or hoody,

Prices to be confirmed. A choice of design will be available; either Alison’s map of Scotland/climbing design, or Fergus’ mountains and beer design. Fiona to e-mail or print off order forms.

Treasurer

5.1 Accounts and payments

All of last semester’s buses are paid for, along with the first part of this semester.

Accounts looking healthy

Freshers’ representatives

6.1 Calendar for next academic year

Jon to begin collecting photos after the Dundonnell meet. There is a suggestion of producing an academic-year wall chart rather than a new calendar for the Freshers fare as many existing members may not want a new calendar in freshers’ week if they already have the existing 2006 calendar, therefore it was agreed that a wall chart would be a better option as it would appeal to both existing and new members and would also be cheaper. Jon to investigate the printing costs for a wall chart to see if this is feasible.

Date of Next Meeting: AGM    provisionally booked for 29th of March at 7.30pm.

                                                All members welcome.

Finally the committee would like to congratulate Andy Pat on his recent marriage!
