Minutes from last meeting: Passed by everyone

President’s Report

1.1  Introduction to Climbing

This will happen at Avertical World.  Have contacted Bob and Alexei and awaiting replies.

1.2  Ice Climbing

It costs £37.50 to climb at the Ice Factor which might be a bit too pricey.  This includes all equipment and instruction.  Decision yet to be made on whether to go or not and to what extent, if at all, the club can subsidise this.

1.3  Honorary President and Vice President

This was discussed and will be decided in the next meeting.

1.4  Conville Trust Courses

Julia will sort it out for this year and we will try to find funding for it.

1.5  Inter-Club Socials

The guy who is organising this (from Glasgow Caledonian Mountaineering Club) hasn’t had many replies apart from us, but we’re all keen.

1.6  Calendars for Fresher’s Week

Perhaps we should make a wall chart instead.  We’ll need to decide on the price, black and white would make them cheaper. Last years’ were too expensive.  Jon will look into prices of a wall chart and report back. The calendar will probably cover the academic year and there will be another calendar starting in January.

1.7 Dry-Flo T-Shirts

Maybe we’ll ask people to order in the first two weeks of term so that they can have decent clothes but also have them in time for DMFF.  If the design is sorted early we could have them in time for Fresher’s Fayre.  Sarah will look into quotes.

1.8  Committee duties

We should all be present for the Fresher’s day and weekend meets and, if possible,  the safety and good practice seminar.

Vice President

2.1 Winter Safety Lecture

Julia has spoken to Roger Wild and this has been arranged for the 1st November 06.

2.2 Safety and Good Practice Seminar (Glenmore Lodge; 18th and 19th November 06)

There are loads of good topics so it would be wise to try and persuade as many people as possible to come.  It costs £30 to book the Seminar then we can either camp or book a chalet.

Chalets would be for 6 people each but would be quite expensive; we will see if the Sports Union would provide sponsorship.

There is no maximum limit to the number of people who can come so we will wait till October to book and therefore include people who attend the Fresher’s fayre.

2.3 First Aid

The canoe club may want to join us for this, as may some others.

Julia has found a 9-hr one which includes basic life saving skill such as  CPR/bandaging etc.  Alternatively we could ask the man who teaches the medics and dentists basic emergency care.

2.4 Navigation

Lecture should be followed by a navigation practice weekend and we should make more of it this year.

2.5 Avalanche Lecture

We’ll wait till January to organise this.

2.6 Climbing Competitions

The SUS competition and BUSA climbing comps are not until early next year. This will be looked into more nearer the time. This has been included as an expenditure for the year, so we should be able to subsidise it.

2.7 Our Bothy (Glas Allt Sheil)

Nothing major needs to be done to it, but it was decided that we should go and check it out.  A plea was made for committee to come and help paint etc. if they’re around. Still to be organised and dates to be finalised.

2.8    Notice Board

Julia will continue managing this.

Meet’s Secretary

3.1 Midsummer Trip

The date will be changed because it currently coincides with Graduation.  There was an extensive debate over where we should go. We decided on the weekend: Fri 30th June- 2nd July.  The various merits of buses and cars were discussed.  We will wait to see the level of interest before a decision is made.

3.2 Meets

There are only 3 huts left to book for Semester 1, and all the deposits have been paid for the places we have.  All of Semester 2’s huts need to be booked.

3.3 Fresher’s Day Trip

It was felt that we wanted to find somewhere which was close but which provided a wide range of possibilities for walking.  There was also discussion as to whether or not we should book a coach or use mini buses.

3.4 Enterprise

We have yet to resolve certain issues with Enterprise, there is currently a question over who will provide transport next year.

Gear Secretary

4.1 Audit

Allan can’t get hold of Alexei so he will just do this himself and put it on the computer.  Perhaps we will need new kit.

Treasurer

5.1 Handover

There has been a quick handover meeting but the books have since been handed into the sports union for annual audit before final handover.

5.2 Signatories

These will be changed soon.

5.3 Grant from Sports Union

The annual estimate of expenses has been submitted to the sports union. This included claims for some replacement gear, subsidy for climbing competitions and the increased cost of bus hire.

5.4 Annual Dinner

This was more expensive than anticipated and accounts are therefore running low.

 Social Secretary

6.1 Autumn Ceilidh

This may be on Friday instead of mid-week (hopefully).

6.2 DMFF

This will happen on the Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November.

Miscellaneous

7.1 Saturday v. Sunday Meets

This has been battled out in the past and Sunday is the best option.  No-one turns up on Saturdays because they’re all suffering from post-irrigation sickness.

7.2 Minibuses

As we always have to book them for two days we should try to make use of them on the other day e.g. by going climbing at Ratho.

7.3 Website etc.

Jon is looking into setting up a better forum system on the website which would  replace the current email list system. People may optionally be able to subscribe to durc (chat) by email, but idea is that that only announcements are emailed out by default. This would have the additional benefit of bringing more members to the website more frequently. Other website improvements including integrated photo

sharing and a munro ticklist are also being developed alongside this.

Date and time of next meeting: 7:30pm 3rd July 06 at 1 Miln-bank Gardens.
